Going for a drive seemed to be a pretty common way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when I was a kid. We'd just drive out in the country, look at leaves (in the fall), maybe stop at a cidermill for cider and doughnuts (in the fall) or at a roadside stand for fresh produce (in the summer and fall) and often ended up at one cousin's house or another. I love driving, so as an adult, I've always enjoyed just taking off and seeing what's out there, preferably with good music playing while I sing along. It's probably what I missed most about not having a car - way more, even, that the convenience of not carting groceries and library books on the bus.
Saturday we decided to take a drive - it was just going to be a short drive, maybe an hour, up Sunrise Mountain just to see how it's been built up over the past couple of years and look at the view from up the mountainside. We ended up taking the drive around the mountain to Lake Mead, then along the lakeshore till we got to Boulder Beach, stopped at the Visitor's Center outside Boulder City, then home. It was about a four-hour drive in all - well, not the drive itself, but we stopped at several places. I was rather peeved with myself to realize I'd forgotten to bring the camera. I also didn't wear walking shoes, which was a shame. Have to remind myself next time we take a drive to bring walking shoes, the camera, and a physical journal. I used to keep a little boogie bag for those impulsive weekend drives. I should start doing that again....
While we were out Saturday, I made a list of things we need to do before we leave Las Vegas. Taking another (longer) drive along Lake Mead - this time with a camera! - is one of them.
Sunday we went to my mom's. It was just the three of us and a pleasant day. She made meatloaf (mom's is the best by far!) and mashed potatoes, and I was able to finish crocheting a soft red scarf for my gramma's 80th birthday present. Of course, the day wouldn't be complete without a little adventure.
My mom's place has a bath and a half, the half being upstairs off the kitchen (she and her boyfriend live in a split-level condo). Turns out, the toilet upstairs has been having some problems; the float doesn't work correctly and it's been jerry-rigged to death. They got someone to fix it but they also knew he didn't really fix it right. So I use the upstairs toilet, flush, wash my hands, am about to dry my hands when I realize the toilet doesn't sound right. Lift the lid and there's water near the top of the bowl. Start plunging with all my might and nothing happens - except for water beginning to fall out of the bowl onto the floor. At least I was barefoot! Mom had to come in, take the top off the tank and play with the floater to get it to stop while I got towels from downstairs to sop up the water. It's not a horrible thing - at least it was at my mom's house, not a friend's - or worse, a stranger's - but really, don't you think she might have told us that the toilet's been acting funny, you might want to go downstairs? !! Oh well, we laughed about it. And she wouldn't let me help clean up, which, rotten daughter that I am, didn't make me feel all that bad. (I couldn't just go in and volunteer without physically pushing her out of the room because it's too small for two people to work in. Tiny.) At least now she can get her boyfriend to actually fix!
So all-in-all, a really nice, pleasant weekend (minus the bit of drama *g*). I'm looking forward to the next drive, which will probably be up by Blue Diamond and Red Rock Canyon.
