I don't know how many times I've listened to the song "Graceland" since I first heard it, but as many times as that is, I never got the urge to go visit Graceland. I figure the song's about more than just that road trip. And I like Elvis a lot but not enough that I felt like I wanted to see his home-turned-museum. But for some reason - "for reasons I cannot explain, there's some part of me wants to see Graceland". Recently while listening to the Graceland album multiple times in the car, I decided I actually do want to see Graceland. I can't explain why - it's not an Elvis thing, it's not a Paul Simon thing, I just want to do it. I think it's an Americana things. Graceland has become a part of American history and popular culture and now I've got it into my head that it's one of those places I just need to see. Since I found out it's only about a 10 hour drive from home - which means I could do it over a long weekend - I want to go even more. I've always loved a good road trip! Irish won't go ("I like Elvis ok, but not enough to go see Graceland") but my best friend is up for the trip, for the same reasons I am. I don't know when it'll happen, maybe not even next year, but I'm thinking that the next road trip I take will probably be to Graceland.
