So I've been racing through Doctor Who ('cause I like it so much that I don't like to stop watching - what will I do when I'm entirely caught up?) and I'm actually near the end of series 4.
I've really come to like Donna a lot. I think it's been good for the Doctor to have a Companion relationship that doesn't have the same kind of intensity as his relationship with Rose. Whether he was in love with her or not - I gather there's some debate about that! - their relationship was certainly intense and very close. I loved his relationship with Martha as well - I've enjoyed watching how the Doctor's relationships with each of his Companions varies - and I really liked that she had a lot of scientific knowledge right from the beginning. That was fun to watch. Donna, though - she seemed like a breath of fresh air. (Which, when you think about it, is a simile that puts the other women in an unfavorable light - what were they, bad breath? - and that's not what I mean at all.) She's just so plain-spoken and outspoken. The first few times she went somewhere with the Doctor, I kept thinking she's not really cut out for this life - but then it was like someone threw a switch or something and she just took to it and decided to stay forever. (And how cool is it that she actually packed for travel.) But I still like Amy best. :-)
(More rambling behind the cut.)
I knew no good would come of that man at the reception whispering things about the Doctor to Martha's mother - I just didn't realize it would mean the end of our civilization as we know it! President Winter was embarrassing to me as an American - what a bully! - even if he was just a fictional character. (Especially since I know that's how many people outside the U.S. view us. *sigh*) He wasn't just a bully though - he was usurping power that wasn't his. He introduced himself as "President Elect Winter" - which means he wasn't actually the President yet. He'd been elected but he wasn't in power yet. He didn't say anything about representing the actual President, which kind of makes me wonder what, exactly, had happened to the actual President and why the military and the rest of the government was going along with him. (Actually, I suspect it's just an instance of sloppy writing - but it makes a fun conspiracy theory within the story.)
I was so happy to see Captain Jack Harkness again! I'd thought neither Rose nor the Doctor had realized she'd brought him back to life, because I was certain they wouldn't leave him behind if they knew. It was a bit of a shock to find out the Doctor did it on purpose. Adds another interesting facet to his personality.
I loved, loved, loved Martha the Missionary, wandering the world alone, risking her life to bring hope to the world. How absolutely cool was that.
I knew the Doctor was going to tell the Master he forgave him before the words were out of this mouth. It just fit.
The Face of Boe. Huh.
"Blink" was fun. Although sending people through time isn't what the Weeping Angels did in the 5th series ep, is it? Didn't they petrify people in that one? I need to go back and rewatch that when I'm caught up.
The Doctor and Donna have left just too soon at least twice now - once when the Doctor's daughter died and then again in the Library. (Is there a spinoff series about the Doctor's daughter? Because that seemed like a really obvious spinoff setup at the end there.) It cracked me up that they brought up the ridiculous amount of running that seems to be a huge part of traveling with the Doctor. It occurred to me during one episode that I'd never last long as a Companion because the first time I had to run more than a yard to save my life, I'd be dead.
River Song! So this is the first time we meet her. I think her and the Doctor's story is intriguing, so today I looked her up on IMDB and accidentally got semi-spoiled regarding something in the most recent ep that I haven't watched yet. No more looking up Doctor Who characters till I'm current.
I know there were more things I wanted to comment on or ask, so no doubt there'll be a Timey-Wimey Stuff Part 2. Right now, though, I'm off to watch more.
