2014 was kind of sucky - it started with a broken furnace which led to a super-high gas bill, then the gas company estimated the next two bills based on the really high one and eventually our gas was shut off. Did you know you can get your hair washed and conditioned at the salon inside WalMart for just six bucks? Fortunately, between that, space heaters, and our microwave, crockpot, and rice cooker, we were fine till we got the gas turned back on in November. In the meantime, though, we also ended up with no internet connection at home (and still don't have one). And on July 4th, we had a car accident. It totaled the car, but the worst injury of everyone involved (2 in our car and 4 in the other), as far as I know was a broken wrist. That would be my wrist, the left one. One of my cousins died near the end of October - one who had been a pall-bearer at my dad's funeral - and I found out on Facebook! The next week, an uncle (by marriage) died and I found out because my mom texted the information! (To be fair, we all knew it was imminent so the text wasn't a surprise.) I couldn't have gone to my cousin's funeral because he lived in Texas, but was able to go to my uncle's, since it was in the next town.

Still, even though it was kind of a sucky year, I know things could've been so much worse. Even without gas, we were better off than so many other people. We didn't go hungry or homeless, we didn't freeze, we had clean water (just not hot water!) - we were fine. And that accident - it amazes me that there weren't worse injuries. The other car knocked a power pole over! Our insurance company was great and covered everything. The car was replaced, I got a short break from work (though I wasn't happy that I didn't get my short-term disability payments until after I returned to work), and my arm has healed beautifully. And lack of internet access at home, in the big scheme of things, can't really be considered a hardship.

So that's my 2014 in a nutshell! I've caught up reading my flist and it sounds like 2015 is going great for some of you and not so good for others. Hugs and prayers and congratulations as appropriate to everyone!
