I was reading about rotation and centrifugal force this morning (in Astrophysics for People in a Hurry) and there was a reference to figure skaters increasing the speed of their spin by pulling their arms in - and it got me wondering if a Vulcan might find figure skating interesting from a scientific point of view. And then I got to wondering if Vulcans have professional athletes. (And now I'm wondering if they do, what Vulcan sports are like. And have they taken to any Earth sports.) From there I got to thinking about some Vulcan becoming fascinated with figure skating upon first seeing it, learning to skate himself, and eventual becoming a competitive skater. Then "some Vulcan" turned into a young Vulcan boy, age 10-12, whose parents move to Earth for professional reasons and take him with them. They live in a northern part of Europe or North America and he's fascinated by the ice and snow of northern winters even though they're quite uncomfortable. And then he visits an ice-skating rink - maybe it's a school trip? - and the rest is history. (I'm not writing it. It's just a plot bunny.)
