I'm watching Star Trek in order, beginning with Enterprise, and am almost through with Season 2 of the original series (which I'm watching in production order this time rather than air date order). Last night I watched A Piece of the Action. It's been awhile and I'd forgotten how much I like this episode and how funny it is. Captain Kirk is having way too much fun with the whole situation (and I suspect the actors were having some fun as well, especially Nimoy and Shatner, as they both got to ham it up some, Shatner more than Nimoy). There's a scene where Kirk give an enormous, joyful grin, much happier than we normally see Captain Kirk being, and it took my breath away a bit. William Shatner can still be so pretty at this age. I generally think of him as "pretty" in the 1950s and by the late 60s maturing into handsome. But when he grinned like that, there it was again.

This is a direct quote from imdb.com: "Kirk makes up the rules of the card game 'fizz bin' as he goes along. William Shatner ad libbed the rules, so his pauses to think and the other actors' confusion are all genuine." I have no idea if it's true but if it is, I'm impressed. It's a funny scene. There's something I noticed for the first time about 25 years ago and now I watch for it. When Kirk asks Spock about the odds of getting a specific hand, Spock says he has never computed them and Kirk says, "Well, they're astronomical". The view returns to Spock, who's standing there behind Kirk mouthing the word "astronomical".

Also, I've decided Fizzbin is a perfect name for a dog. After watching every episode but the last of Enterprise, I decided I'd love to have a beagle some day and now I want to name it Fizzbin.

I may never get a beagle - certainly not while Lucky and Lucy, our adult cats are alive. If we ever get a dog I think we'd want to get a young one while we have young cats or kittens so they can all get used to each other at once. Perhaps I'll just have an imaginary dog named Fizzbin! (Fizzbin isn't a cat name. It's just not.)

The reason I didn't watch the last episode of Enterprise is because (1) I hate it - it's not an Enterprise episode, it's a Next Gen episode and (2) I want to watch it after the Next Gen episode where it takes place (Pegasus).
