I don't know how many non-Michiganders know about it - I'm not sure many Michiganders know about it - but there's a massive salt mine beneath Detroit. It's the remains of a prehistoric ocean that covered the area. I remember my best friend in elementary school telling me about it. I think they used to give tours and they went on one. I think maybe she sent me a postcard. (Or maybe not - that was a long time ago!)
After reading about various cooking/table salts yesterday I got to wondering if the mine is still in operation and it is. The salt they mine there is only used for road salt now, but you know the Midwest - we use a whole lot of road salt every winter. They can probably stay in business as long as we have cars. If they did give tours in the past, they no longer do. I found the company's website and an Atlas Obscura story about it.
