DH and I finally saw the latest Star Wars last Saturday. I'd been wanting to see it since the credits rolled on the previous movie, but I didn't want to wait in a long line this time, so we put it off for a few weeks.

A little bit spoilery, so behind a cut:

It seems most everyone I know liked this one best of the prequel trilogy and I'm no exception. There were a few annoyances, such as the absurdly noisy space battle, and the idea that humanoids could survive without any sort of life support on a volcanic planet. (Shouldn't they have suffocated and/or burned up?)

Padme - wow, what happened to the strong women we saw in the first two movies? That woman wouldn't have given up and just decided to die without a fight no matter how her heart had been broken or how she'd been betrayed. At least that's what I saw then - maybe I'm misremembering? I figured Padme had to die but I'd always assumed she would have been killed defending her children or something similar. (And those twins! They were huge! Certainly not newborns.)

Anakin - I just don't find him a sympathetic character at any point in the prequel trilogy. I know some people said they felt it was the Jedi Counsel's fault he turned to the dark side because of how they treated him - but I thought they treated him as one should treat an immature, petulant young man who believes he's better than he is. He let the prophecy and Palpatine's flattery go to his head. I do think the Counsel shouldn't have kept secrets from him, though. Not allowing him to become a Master before he was ready is one thing; patting him on the head and saying, "now, now, little, boy, let the grown-ups worry about that" is quite another. It doesn't excuse his actions, though. Maybe the problem is the actor - I never found him really convincing in anything except, I suppose, the fight scenes.

Obi-Wan - still too young. There's no way the Obi-Wan in ROTS could age to Old Ben Kenobi in the first Star Wars. I also thought he would be broken-hearted over Anakin's betrayal and the murder of all the Jedi and the children. He seemed to have no reaction at all in retrospect. (Maybe I'll see it again this weekend; if I do, I'll have things to watch out for.) Also, he had to know there was something up with Anakin. Not necessarily that he was married to Padme, but for heaven's sake, where did he think Anakin was going each night? Did he never once inquire into Anakin's personal life or ask him where he lived? He knew where Padme lived, right? Couldn't he put two and two together? I wish Anakin had confided in him once Padme became pregnant. Maybe Obi-Wan could've helped.

There was also plenty I liked. Why is it that the positives never come as readily to mind? Very annoying! I thought Padme's funeral procession was well-done and the black, rather than red, markings on the young queen's face was a nice touch. I thought the end was good and it was a nice connection to the original movie.

Am I the only one who remembers way back when, when Return of the Jedi was done and George Lucas talked about doing six more movies - a prequel trilogy and a sequel trilogy? The only thing I heard about it when TPM was being made was that he'd changed his mind about the third trilogy. This time around, no-one's mentioned it at all. I sort of wish he would make them but I guess they're not really necessary to the story, not like the prequels. Still would be nice to have a trilogy of trilogies, though.
