It seems so obvious, doesn't it? I don't think people get it, though. Men are not women. They're not meant to be. So why is it so important to so many people that men try to think and behave like women and when they don't succeed they're reviled or mocked for it? I just saw the movie "The Breakup", with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston. Good acting, wonderful Chicago scenery, but I found it very disturbing. The movie is about a couple who break up and, basically from the beginning, Vince Vaughn's character (Greg) is assumed to be the one at fault. Jennifer Aniston's character (Brooke) is supposed to be the sympathetic one. In fairness, I think that the writers did try to show that problems in a marriage (or live-in relationship, as this one was) can be blamed on both participants, but I don't think they did a particularly good job.

It's a disappointing ending, but not a surprising one. It's a trend I see in popular media all the time and have seen for years. I think Dr. Huxtable was the last married father I saw on a sitcom who wasn't a boob, a boor, or a fool. I find the way men are represented on tv shows (particularly sitcoms) - and in tv commercials - to be appalling. Of course there are exceptions, especially, I think, in genre tv. But they're not the rule. I know a lot of people answer that complaint with the way women have been treated through the majority of history, saying it's an attempt by women to make things better for themselves. That doesn't make it right, though. Men are not our enemy and we can't find equality with men by treating them like they're inferior, portraying them as stupid or silly or weak. Men and women aren't alike. We have fundamental differences, not just physically, but in the way we think and perceive and process things. Men are not women - and why would we want them to be?
