We moved back to Bremen in October (I don't remember if I've mentioned it yet - I know I haven't posted much in awhile), so I'm about 15-20 miles south of where we lived for the past three years. It's (usually) a nice drive to work, we both love living in a small town, and it's close enough to Mishawaka if we want to shop somewhere bigger than the local grocery store or Dollar General. We also don't get Lake effect snow.

I didn't really think about that till this week. The last winter that we lived here (2007/2008) we didn't get much snow and really didn't get a whole the last couple winters either. The past couple of days, though, there's been Lake effect snow. On Thursday I woke up to a dusting of snow - the grass still showed through and the road in was clear until I got about 10-12 miles north. At that point, there was more snow on the ground and it was coming down steadily. It snowed a good part of the day and the roads were pretty bad on the way home - until I got to that same point on the road where I'd noticed more snow on the ground in the morning. I had dry roads the rest of the way home and it was clear that it hadn't snowed all day in Bremen. The same thing happened yesterday. In fact, it snowed so hard during the day, that at times it was snowing sideways and I couldn't see buildings two blocks away. (I work on the 6th floor - I can usually see buildings quite a ways off.) I figured it might take up to an hour to get home - but again, halfway home, the road was clear and dry and it was snowing but only lightly.

We planned to go into Mishawaka today to do some shopping then meet a friend for dinner. It snowed overnight, about three or four inches. Irish got on Facebook and said one of his friends was reporting 16-20 inches of snow in South Bend and Mishawaka. I texted my friend to ask if they really had that much snow and she said yes, up to 30 inches in some places. So we postponed dinner till another time and stayed in all day. It's about 9:30 p.m. now, I think we've had perhaps five-six inches of snow - and 20 miles north, the mayor's declared a snow emergency, public transportation is shut down, and the official snowfall amount since 1:00 this morning is 23.6 inches. 20 miles! Who'd have thought it would've made that much difference!

(We also have different squirrels here as well. They're all gray squirrels, while up in Mishawaka, they're the red/brown ones.)
