I'm at the computer lab but have to hurry so I'm just posting a few things:

Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs! May you have many more years to come filled with family, music, and great fic!

Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] ozma914 for his (always deserved) nominations.

[livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat, I just read the latest installment of "Return of the Key" and it's every bit as good as the others. And there's one more to go! Yay! (I wonder how Faith and the Els will get along. Doesn't that sound like some odd doo-wop group?)

I was in class during the VP debates and haven't even seen highlights yet. I'll do some searching on my own on Monday, but in the meantime, is anyone aware of any websites that will be re-running the debate for awhile, or at least the major points?

Also, doesn't this just figure: Wednesday, I think it was, I stopped in here to catch up some e-mail and do some schoolwork and got wonderfully distracted by [livejournal.com profile] lauramcewan's Starsky & Hutch vids over on youtube. They're fantastic; she's very gifted. (But she's not lauramcewan on youtube and I forget exactly what her user name is there. Look for Starsky & Hutch vids set to "Still the One", "Dancing Nancies", and "Desperado" among others to find her.) So that night, I kept having dreams about S&H, incluing one in which I was writing a fic that took place before the pilot, when Hutch and Nancy/Vanessa were splitting up and this dream included chunks of just perfect dialogue between Starsky & Hutch. I remember waking up thinking I was far too sleepy to get up and write it all down and I sure hoped I remembered it in the morning. Do you think I did? No, of course not! *sigh* (I know I could keep a notebook and pen by my bed for just this purpose, but I have that type of insomnia that does not allow me to sleep straight through the night and I try not to encourage it. It's been much, much better since I got a bed in August - we'd been sleeping on the floor - but I still wake up at least twice a night. I'm not going to wake up on purpose just to record dialogue that might, in the morning, prove not to be quite that perfect after all!) (But this stuff really was.... LOL)

Nice for me because I can do some catching up on e-mail, mailing lists, live journal....

November 1st in Las Vegas - this morning it was 52 degrees (F) outside with clear blue skies, lots of sun, and a good wind. Pleasant weather to walk in. I miss "real fall", but this'll do - it really is a pretty day today.

We had Friday off work for Nevada Day and I took home lots of fic to read. A lot of it I found only so-so, but I didn't dislike any of it and I especially enjoyed History in a Sweater by Rivanna Michaels. The author noticed something in Starsky & Hutch that I definitely didn't - that is, that the guys seem to pass the same burnt orange sweater back and forth. Whose is it, really? (And how often do they share clothing - obviously I need to pay closer attention!) "History in a Sweater" is well-written and while it's ostensibly about the sweater, it's really about the partnership, how it began, how it developed. Lots of love without any mush. Actually, my only complaint about the story - if you can even call it a complaint - is that it kept feeling like pre-slash, but it stayed gen, which was a tad frustrating. Not enough to sap my ejoyment of the story and I'd certainly recommend it.

That pre-slash/why won't it become slash? feeling is something I get every time I read Starsky & Hutch genfic. I suspect it's because even anti-slashers see slash in that show on a subconscious level and can't help inserting it into what they write even though that's not their intention. I could be completely off base though.

I toyed with signing up for NaNoWriMo this year but didn't, mostly because I - hmmm, I guess I don't really know why. When I closed the NaNoWriMo page on Thursday, telling myself "no not this year", it seemed like a good idea. Right now, it just sort of seems like procrastination. Then again, it may be the fact that I haven't written so much as a drabble since July that put me off.

Must write PotC Hallowe'en drabble before Wednesday....

[livejournal.com profile] killabeez recently pimped Jeremiah to me. This is not something new - Killa's great at pimping her favorite fandoms; she's the one who got me into Starsky and Hutch. ("You'll love it," she said. "I'll send you a tape." Fateful words, those!)

Anyway, I now have tapes of Jeremiah and have been watching the eps as I find the time. I've seen 14 eps so far (two tapes worth) and hope I can watch another tape over the weekend. Jeremiah is set in a future world after the adult population has been killed off by an illness referred to as the Big Death. I have a few questions about the timing (it doesn't work in my head) but not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the show by any means. The main characters are two men, Jeremiah and Kurdy, who ran into each other while wandering. They teamed up and ended up joining a group of people who live in Thunder Mountain and who are trying to rebuild society. Jeremiah and Kurdy spend a lot of time traveling around, meeting other groups of people, helping them out, finding resources.... I guess a lot of people find them to be a slashy pairing. I don't see it so far, but I'm always willing to be convinced and, hey, I have four more tapes to get through so anything's possible!

So what does Jeremiah have to do with Buffy? As I watch episodes of Jeremiah, I keep being reminded of a Buffy fanfic I read a year or so ago. It was by Fallowdoe and called "Spiegel im spiegel". I hunted for it today and found it at <http://allaboutspike.com/auth.html?au=113> . The story is an AU, set after the end of Season 5 - but in this AU, Buffy didn't get to Dawn in time, didn't save Dawn's life, and didn't stop the apocalypse. The story is well-written, stunning, just breath-taking. I can't recommend it highly enough. I was thrilled to find that Fallowdoe has begun a sequel (though typical of me, just a few hours after reading it, I can't remember what the name is!) which can be found at the same place.

I love the way things blend together sometimes. Synchronicity. I guess that's become a cliche over the years, hasn't it? I still love it.

When I grow up, I want to write this well.

When All is Said and Done is the sequel to After the Dust Has Cleared, with Que Quieres en la Vida the last of the trilogy. (Both are at fanfiction.net)

Since I haven't seen Once Upon a Time in Mexico yet, I can't judge how true to the film the characters are, however, I can say that her characters are very well done. They're consistent throughout the stories and the changes they undergo make sense. The plotting is solid. Like the first one, these are stories I can read without being aware that I'm reading them. I printed them out so I could read them at home and now I don't want to get rid of the printouts or use the backs for anything else. Long time since that's happened!

Que Quieres en la Vida is, by the way, slash. It's R-rated slash, meaning not laden with graphic details, and the relationship is well-written and believable (at least in the context of the trilogy; as I said, I can't comment on the movie).

Sometimes I think I write well, then I read something like this and realize that, well, I write. I don't know that I'd ever be able to write like this.

I may never find out because I'm a lazy writer and I know it. Usually I'm content to be a lazy writer and throw out a short-short or a vignette once in awhile, but when I read stuff like this I begin to think about actually putting some effort into it.

Yesterday I read two very good stories, one in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe and the other in the Once Upon a Time in Mexico universe. (I've seen - and adored - Pirates; haven't seen OUaTiM but am familiar with El Mariachi from Desperado.)

The Spittin' Image, by Teresa Coffman, can be found at http://www.cyber-kat.com/potc/fanfic.html . This is a longish story, very well researched and well written, with an excellent feel for the characters. In my opinion, she gets them dead-on. The dialogue is good as are the descriptions and it's well-plotted, too. For me, a good book or story is one which I'm not consciously aware of reading at the time and this was true for TSI. It also made me want more.

The OUaTiM story can be found at http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1519851 and is called After the Dust has Cleared by Miss Becky. Since I haven't seen this movie, I don't know how well she did with the characters, but El Mariachi rings true (as true as one viewing of Desperado will let it). Again, well written, well-plotted, and I could visualize the whole thing as it happened. There are two sequels which I'm eager to get to. (And off I go now!)
